Dr. Insel received his B.S. degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his Ph.D.

in neurophysiology at Yale University in 1972 before joining Harvard University's faculty as an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology. He served as a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School until 1981, when he became director of NIMH's Division of Neuroscience and Mental Disorders, where he oversaw NIMH's research programs on mental disorders, neuroscience, mental retardation, brain development, neurochemistry, neurodegeneration, human genomics, and AIDS/HIV research. His research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.
